A fungus of mushroom type can be cultivated in soil, above the ground, or in a specific food source, depending on the environmental conditions for growth. This high-protein food is referred to as a superfood.

Mushrooms vs. Medicinal Mushrooms

  • Mushrooms: have a nice flavor and texture, which you will usually find in grocery shops and use for cooking.
  • Medicinal mushrooms: Though they don't have a pleasant texture these have been in use for a very long time in many Asian countries to treat illnesses, and more people are becoming aware of their benefits in terms of science these days.

They are consumed because these mushrooms possess the ability to strengthen the immune system or lessen inflammation, among other health advantages.

About Medicinal mushrooms:

  • Therapeutic mushrooms are involved in the preparation of nutraceuticals as these contain bioactive components.
  • These have been used in folk medicine for ages throughout the world especially in Asian countries due to their biologically active chemicals that have positive effects on health.
  • People have been using mushrooms in place of vegetables 1:1 in their diets, according to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) (USDA, 2022).

Benefits:

  • Medicinal Mushrooms are taken as supplements as they promote health by reducing sodium intake, as they themselves are low in sodium content.
  • These mushrooms have polysaccharides, proteins, peptides, terpenoids, polyphenols, vitamin D, vitamin B6, selenium, etc. as bioactive ingredients.
  • Among these phytocompounds' special attributes are their ability to prevent cognitive decline and to have immunomodulatory, hypocholesterolemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects as well as to stimulate intestinal health.

Types of Medicinal Mushrooms:

  • Chaga mushrooms (Inonotus obliquus (Ach. ex Pers.) Pilát)

  • Reishi mushrooms (Linzhi Ganoderma)

This variety of mushrooms is bigger, has a shinier appearance, and tastes bitter. Has almost 400 different types of nutrients in it.

Benefits:

Its applications include - diabetes, carcinogenic treatments, influenza, viral treatments, Alzheimer's, etc. Although very little research is available, more work needs to be done on this.

  • Turkey tail (Trameteses versicolor (L.) Lloyd)

Turkey Tail, meaning 'of several colors', versicolor accurately describes this fungus that displays a unique blend of markings. Owing to its shape being similar to that of a wild turkey's tail feathers, T. versicolor is most commonly referred to as a turkey tail. Turkey Tail contains vitamins B3 & D.
